Missouri’s own alternative indie band Scamps has recently released their second EP, Lave. And, it's very safe to say that the new release has caught the attention of many people.
In this EP, the band features a new side of themselves and displays a lot of very special firsts. It was their first batch of songs created in a professional studio. But, it was also the first time drummer Ross VanBree performed on every song. The band launches a newfound energy to their sound, something that they're very proud to see. Vanbree describes it as, “This EP represents a transition struggle into the new life we decided to pursue (fully diving into music).” They also have a more of an edgier vibe, both in lyrics and sound, than their past releases.
A song that is definitely worth highlighting, has to be “Anyways.” It's clear to see this one became a fan favorite upon being released. I think when comparing it to “Laves”, a song that gives off an entrancing, beachy vibe, “Anyways” brings out a heavier side in the band, which a lot of people seem to enjoy. With a lead-in lyric like, “I've been thinking back to a time when you weren't on my mind / You were a stranger, you were a stranger.” and quick/percussive guitars that immediately pull you in, you can see the exact reason why it quickly became so popular.
A personal favorite, however, is the title track “Lave”. Lave definitely feels like it belongs in a coming-of-age movie. With its mellow beginning and upbeat chorus, it brings some light into such a heavy hitting EP.
