This will always be a night to remember for me as I was able to witness the absolutely wonderful Clairo perform her amazing songs while bringing this large group of people together.
Claire Cottrill, better known under her artist name Clairo, quickly took the world by storm back in 2017, almost by accident actually, with a self-recorded video for her song “Pretty Girl”. She also had a hit song with 3-piece alt/indie band Wallows called “Are You Bored Yet” back in 2019, which became very popular on TikTok. Since then, everything has gone uphill for her career.
Her concert at The Fillmore Philly on July 22nd was the start of her rescheduled shows that were supposed to happen back in February. The show started off with mellow Canadian indie artist Jonah Yano, whose set I actually enjoyed a lot. The set was very well assembled and the songs on the setlist flowed so well together so it was just a soothing set altogether.
Clairo came on at 9:15 on the dot and quickly the crowd got very excited. She started off her set with the lead track on Sling, “Bambi”. Clairo of course got the crowd singing in no time. There was one part of the show that caught my eye and that was the sweet fan project that happened near the middle of the show. Started anonymously by @SlingTourPhilly, many signs were passed out early on in the queue that said “Sling is special to me because…” with such sweet words that were held up during “Blouse” in celebration of the one-year anniversary of Sling (and “Blouse” being the lead single). Seeing these fan projects happen in real-time is always so heartwarming not only from the crowd, but I can only assume the person who started it all sees their hard work and effort being seen and appreciated by the artist. Taking a little second to observe the crowd from the photo pit always makes me happy to see people’s faces of awe as they watch the artists I can only assume they waited hours for.
Towards the end of the show, many sweet gifts were thrown on stage like shirts and Clairo adored them all. Clairo, of course, ended the night on a happy note by finishing the set off with her most popular songs “Pretty Girl” and “Sofia” which of course had everyone jumping and screaming. I really hope Clairo comes to Philly again because she was just such a fun artist to witness live.
